Explanation of Maitreya Centre Prayers

How Prayers Work!                      [An Event introduction]
Everyone is welcome to our group chanted prayers, or Puja  in Sanskrit. These are an important component of training in a spiritual life. They help to still our mind, connect with the Buddhas, and receive blessings. Below is the list of some of the group prayers we practice together at the centre. All prayers are chanted in English to the accompaniment of a CD recording with music. You are welcome to join in or just sit and listen. All group prayers are free of charge. Centre Sessions occur in Term Time only

WISHFULFILLING JEWEL WITH TSOG  [WFJ]  PRAYERS
On Tuesdays 5.30pm (check our calendar for this event. Times subject to alteration ). These prayers are very similar to Heart Jewel Prayers, but are slightly longer as they include additional request prayers and a ‘Tsog’ or food offering. For Tsog pujas we gather together and make special offerings. You are welcome to bring a vegetarian food offering if you wish. (75 mins)

HEART JEWEL PRAYERS
(check calendar for times). These prayers are the heart practice of Kadampa Buddhism and is also known as the Guru Yoga of Je Tsongkhapa. Engaging in these prayers helps to purify negativity, accumulate merit (good fortune), receive blessings and attain a very special compassion, wisdom and spiritual strength. The second half also includes prayers to the Wisdom Dharma Protector, who helps us to overcome obstacles to spiritual realisations and to arrange all the favourable conditions for our realisations to grow. These two practices are the very essence of Kadampa Buddhism. In the prayers there are two pauses of 10 and 5 minutes to allow or silent meditation. (60 mins)

OFFERING TO THE SPIRITUAL GUIDE (OSG)PRAYERS
Every 10th and 25th of the month (check calendar for times). This is a very special chanted prayer requesting our Spiritual Guide to increase our compassion, wisdom and spiritual power. This practice includes a ‘Tsog’ or food offering. For Tsog pujas we gather together and make special offerings. You are welcome to bring a vegetarian food offering if you wish. (90 mins)

TARA PRAYERS (LIBERATION FROM SORROW)
Every 8th of the month (check our calendar for times). Tara is a female Buddha, a manifestation of the ultimate wisdom of all the Buddhas. Her name means ‘Rescuer’ because she rescues us from all outer and inner fears. Ultimately she rescues us from all suffering and guides us to full Enlightenment (45 mins)

DAKINI YOGA PRAYERS/ QUICK PATH PRAYERS
(see calendar for times)These prayers are part of the practice of Buddha Vajrayogini and are open to those with a Highest Yoga Tantra empowerment only. If you would like to know more about receiving the empowerment (initiation) of Highest Yoga Tantra, please ask us.
